We’ve come a long way from hand sewing by candle light and carting our work to market on horseback. Both the mechanical and digital revolution transformed how we create and how we sell our handwork. While each generation needs to welcome and grow with our changing world it is also so very important to not forget the value in what has come before.
For our August theme we are traveling into the past and exploring the history of handmade and our Handmade Heritage from lace-making to letterpress. We will talk about old talents and techniques, share stories and lessons learned, pieces passed down through generations and the legacy of living a handmade life. We are part of a movement that started when the first person decided to get creative and embellish what they were making, lets trace some of that history together and see what it tells us about where we are now.
I hope you enjoy this theme and get involved-share your stories of treasured pieces of handmade, your own handmade heritage, or a maker from the past whose work you love or a technique you want to see passed on. Blog about it and add your link below or join in on our #omhg chats this month!
This will be fun! My Great Grandmother’s sewing bag contains a well used darning egg for sock mending! Also tatting threads. I have lots of hankies with tatted edgings. Who does either of those anymore?
I am really looking forward to reading this months posts, we are incredibly blessed here in the UK to have such an amzing heritage of crafts.
We are currently celebrating 60 years since the Festival of Britain that was an amazing exhibition of works from leading artists and crafts people of that time. This has lead to several design houses reissuing designs or new designs being created in celebration of this.
It is also the 150th anniversary of William Morris & Co which is a huge part of British design heritage.
I will be reading your posts this month with great interest as it is fantastic to also learn the heritage of other countries.
