Oh My University is in Session!

oh my university, oh my handmade

“Knowledge is not simply another commodity. On the contrary. Knowledge is never used up. It increases by diffusion and grows by dispersion.” –Daniel Joseph Boorstin

Class is officially in session! Welcome to Oh My University, where knowledge shared is knowledge(sorry for the punnieness, I couldn’t resist). For our September theme we are getting back to our businessy goodness roots and sharing some of the biggest lessons we’ve learned on our creative journeys and things we wish we had known when we started out. This month, I asked our contributors to focus in on their individual super powers and what they are experts on, we might not all be experts on everything but all of us are experts on something and we’re going to share that knowledge with you! Get ready for a month packed with insights and information on building a business and living a creative life.

Don’t forget to mark your calendars because our first #omhg chat after our August break is coming up Thursday, September 6th from 1-2pm EST. We’ll be starting off our month of chats by talking about what we learned during our summer vacation and our plans for the fall.

And of course, it isn’t a real school without some fun homework…

What is your personal super power, the skill that you are totally amazeballs at, your one-of-a-kind rock star ability? If you had to choose one thing that you could go into a room and teach without hesitation what would it be? Share your superskill(s) in the comments, bonus points for letting us know how you earned your expert badge!

  1. Oh I love this! My super power is turning lemons into lemonade. I am an optimist and I actively look for the positive in a situation. What can I learn from a given circumstance? How can I use a seemingly negative in my life to be a better person, better parent, better artist? I suffered for many years with chronic migraine-I was not thriving but merely surviving. I learned to take each day-and find the good. “Accentuate the positive, eliminate the negative” are you humming that with me?

  2. My super power is helping people see their highest potential. I can see beyond what most people thinks is possible for themselves. I recently just realized this was my superpower.

    What’s yours Jessika?

Hooray for superheroes! @April I love your positivity seeking powers and the magical alchemy of turning something sour into sweetness and a lesson to be learned-I am so totally humming along with you!

@Tracy, fabulous! So often our perception of ourselves limits us and makes us feel smaller then we really are inside, your super powers are so vital because they see through those veils into the beautiful awesomeness we hold inside. Love it!

My super power? Creating community of course! I can find commonalities and build safe space for just about anyone, from inner city kids to seniors to our own creative community-I am awesome at bringing people together to make things better (or just be there). Shazaam!

hmmmmm, tough question Jessika! I would have to say my superpower is idea generation. I can talk to anybody about what they are doing or want to do and I can offer ideas about how to bring their dreams to fruition, or how to get them out to customers, or how to expand their original idea to a bigger scope. think big right?

    • Jessika says:

@Karen, idea generation is one heck of a super power! The power of seeing what is possible not just what is probable is rare & wonderful:)
@Sarah, love fast feet as a super power-tap is more then just fast feet though, it is being able to understand, remember & then perform complex choreography in front of others-that is a skill & confidence you can draw on at any time!
@L-Oh yes, you have a super power, just one quick dive into your blog showed me that! You hold space for your family & your 14 while questioning, considering and working towards what is best for those you love & yourself…if that isn’t a super power of awesomeness I don’t know what is! I am sure while you start discovering what super power you can claim as your own you will find there is far more than just one:)

  4. Sarah says:

I am a great tap dancer. I used to be probably one of the best in the state 🙂 Now I haven’t really done it in a while, but I’m sure I could still teach a class no problem. Totally my superpower 🙂 I’m not sure it’s very transferable to anything else though, I just have fast feet.

  5. L. McG.-E. says:

This is the question I find hardest to answer, that has me seriously questioning, do I have one? So this is what I am working to uncover this year, what IS my superpower?

So, no answer for you, just someone beginning a journey to identify and uncover theirs.

  6. LOV says:

Pricing and bookkeeping for a small handmade business. I still have a lot to learn about marketing and community, but I’m good with the numbers, at least! Have even taught/written a little about them.

  7. I think that I’m gifted at encouraging others – especially when it comes to trying new things. I don’t think that I “learned” this anywhere, it’s just how I came into the world! Except that maybe I got it from my dad, he’s a pro at noticing what’s great about others and complimenting them on it. Encouraging others makes me feel good inside! It makes me feel good to make other people feel good! 🙂

  8. My super power is intuition. I often sense what is not said and I think this helps me make good decisions in my business and friendships.

I also love to connect other people to each other. When I find something that I love (like this community!) I shout about it and share.

  9. Moxie Lisa says:

Love this month’s theme because I think we all have something we are good at (even if we don’t know it yet). My personal super power is the ability to see design before it’s on paper. I can look at someone’s product and instantly see a vision of what their brand should be. I love that I get to use my super power and make a living at it. 🙂

  10. Cody says:

My amazeballs (love that word!) super power would have to be the power of positivity. My friends have told me before that I am optimistic and positive to the point of annoying, lol. I am a take things as they come, roll with the punches and be happy about it type person. 🙂

  11. Rebecca says:

I’ve been really thinking about this — it was hard for me to come up with something, but I think I have.

I think my superpower is facilitation — I have an uncanny nack for keeping meetings on-time and focused, distilling discussions into manageable relatable parts, and bringing together tech and non-tech people and getting them talking the same language.

It’s actually making me see the product I’m making in a new light! Soo very cool! Thanks Jessica.

  12. Barb Darwin says:

My super power is my creative way of combining materials to create beautiful jewellery pieces. It became a source of comfort and relaxation while dealing with the extraordinary needs of our autistic son.
