Why Do You Do What's on Your To Do?

Wednesday, November 14, 2012 by Nicole North Rodriguez

THE HOLIDAYS ARE COMING!! THE HOLIDAYS ARE COMING!! THINGS TO DO! THINGS TO MAKE! PLACES TO GO! PEOPLE TO SEE!

EVERYONE START FREAKING OUT!!

Or take a big, slow, deep breathe and remember WHY.

WHY you started your business or blog.

WHY you hustle to fill those holiday orders.

WHY you host that holiday party.

WHY you spend days making your house holiday homey and magical.

WHY you bake or buy all those goodies.

WHY you travel to see family and friends.

WHY you sacrifice sanity sometimes.

WHY you donate your time or money.

WHY you endlessly search for or make the perfect gifts for loved ones.

WHY you care so much.

Before you let your To Do list overwhelm you, consider whether there’s opportunity to be found within each task.

For each item on your list, try to answer at least one of the following questions:

WHO are you serving? (family/friends/customers/community/yourself)

WHAT are you giving? (time/tangibles/reminders/feelings/memories)

WHEN are you receiving? (fulfillment/happiness/income/family time/gifts/nourishment/personal time)

WHERE are you connecting? (in person/online/through calls and letters)

HOW are you growing? (as a person/in your relationships/in your business/as a family)

Those WHOs, WHATs, WHENs, WHEREs, and HOWs should hold the answers to your big picture WHYs. And if they don’t? Perhaps it’s time to reassess what’s on that To Do list. Are there “should dos” and “ought tos” on there that are weighing you down? Scratch them off your list! Don’t let them keep you from your important “must dos” and awesome “want tos”.

Now admittedly, not every task is going to have some EXHILARATING higher calling behind it. Cleaning the bathroom before your holiday party arrive isn’t going to light up your life, but it is a “must do” opportunity to serve friends and family by providing them clean facilities and allow you the peace of mind, knowing you’ve made guests comfortable.

So take a few minutes, write down your To Dos and then look for the opportunities within that give them meaning and purpose. Above is a printable worksheet with the WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, HOW questions that will help answer WHY you’re doing your To Dos (click the image above to open, download, and print).

And heads up, this printable works for other times in life as well, not just during the holidays! Got lots of big ideas you want to move forward on? Use this worksheet to see opportunities, get to your WHYs and help prioritize your tasks.

Good luck!
